I'm a Believer

So, just got a copy of the newest issue of The Believer in the mail. It's excellent. For those of you who don't know about Timothy McSweeny's Internet Concern, you should look around. But don't look around too much, because if you don't I can justify linking to tons of that stuff later.

Anyway, believer is a McSweeney's magazine, and while I'm sure it's excellent every month, I splurged on it this month and bought a physical copy of it. It's eight dollars, and currently that's too much money for me to spend on a magazine, really. I got my whole year-long No Depression subscription for that price. What makes this month's believer so awesome is the accompanying CD which contains brand-freakin'-new songs by bands like Spoon, the Mountain Goats (aka Me, maybe) and others. It's great. The theme behind the CD is "everybody just covers what they've been listening to" which is awesome. I don't even care if most of the covers end up sucking, it's just a great idea with a lot of good musicians involved, both on the tracklist and in the song selection. Even if the people behind it seem a little "freak folk" heavy. God forgive me for saying that, but it seemed less esoteric than calling it "golden apples of the sun" heavy. It's certainly that.

Can you imagine I'm writing about another record I'm not even attempting to review? I can. PS, I "legally" got a copy of that Pernice Brothers record, and I was right to assume that it wouldn't suck. So, there you go.

Brian, please explain to me what this "freakfolk" nonsense is all about. Because when I think freakfolk, I don't think Iron and Wine. I think people freaking out while playing folk music on acoustic guitars. If "freakfolk" is something other than this, I'm gonna pound on genre-name-givers. Please assist me in doing so.

It's one of those really annoying constructed genres of music. Not that those who constructed it didn't have a point, but...

I feel like I'm probably being accurate when I say that the people who created and propogated the idea of Freak Folk are the people at pitchfork media. I'm not sure, though, if they coined it or if they just bring it up all the time.

Basically, you know Devendra Banhart? He's awesome, and quirky and kind of crazy (but in that probably-just-an-art-student-fakin'-it kind of way). He made a compilation to go with some magazine (see my earlier link for what I hope is more edification on this) called Golden Apples of the Sun.

Pfork (or maybe someone else) latched on to GAotS as sort of a charter document in this vein of wierd, quirky folk music that seems to be growing (but only really seems new when you willfully forget that many of its proponents have been putting out records for a while now.)

Anyway, that's all. All I really mean by its' heavy on the freak folk is that it's heavy on the Golden Apples bands (the ones on the believer comp are Devendra Banhart, Vetiver, Josephine Foster, CocoRosie, Espers and by virtue of the Decemberists covering her song, Joanna Newsom. That list may be incomplete as I did it from memory and neither CD is within my reach right now.

I need a life. Sorta.

If you want a more thorough idea of what freakfolk is besides the fact that Sam Beam is on that comp, then eagerly await my next post. I think I'll address it.

How can we not be eagerly awaiting your next post when they happen ever-so-often?
